A former South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball standout has already felt the tough reality of WNBA training camp cuts, as rosters begin to take shape ahead of the 2026 season.

Sakima Walker was waived by the Minnesota Lynx this week after joining the team on a training camp contract. The 6-foot-4 forward went undrafted but earned a preseason opportunity, appearing in two exhibition games. In limited minutes, Walker showed flashes of potential, recording four points, two rebounds, and two blocks in one outing.

Despite the early exit, Walker’s professional journey is far from over. Like many players released during camp, she could still land with another team, secure a developmental spot, or continue her career overseas.

WNBA training camps are notoriously competitive, with teams trimming rosters down to just 12 players before the regular season tips off in early May. That leaves little margin for error, especially for undrafted players trying to break into the league.

Walker, who was part of South Carolina’s 2024 national championship team, remains one of many former Gamecocks chasing a spot at the professional level as final cuts continue across the league.
