Billy Napier’s future is uncertain with the Florida Gators. The team just suffered a second straight loss this season and things aren’t looking up in Gainesville. No. 3 LSU took care of Florida with a 20-10 final after falling to an unranked USF team 18-16 in the prior week.
The schedule does not get easier as the Gators travel to Miami to face the 5th-ranked Hurricanes. After that, seven of their next eight opponents are currently ranked, with teams like Georgia and Texas on the schedule. For Miami, they just beat USF 49-12. The same team that beat the Gators in Week 2. The Hurricanes’ defense has three interceptions this season and has only allowed 204 passing yards per game. Needless to say, this is going to be an uphill climb for wins.
For Napier, his seat is extremely hot, and the fans are upset. To send him packing out from Gainesville, his buyout would be 85% of his current contract. He signed a seven-year, $51.8 million deal in 2021 and a base salary that increases $100,000 every year. Florida would owe Napier 50 percent of his remaining contract, which is $19.8 million, within thirty days of the termination date. His salary for 2025 is $7.4 million with nearly $10 million due to him through the next three seasons through 2029.
All of Napier’s remaining payments would be paid in instalments of 12.5 percent every July beginning July 15 through 2028. He would be owed $13,998,437.50 within thirty days of termination and $3,499,609.13 on July 15 in 2026 and $3,499,609.12 on July 15, 2027, and again in 2028, according to the Gainesville Sun.
With the loss to LSU, Napier’s record at Florida is 20-21 in his fourth season as Gators head coach. A new head coach will be expensive, but it may be worth it to win.
