Barry Ferguson feels sorry for Youssef Chermiti after what he heard at Hampden, Rangers star didn’t ask for this….

Youssef Chermiti is running out of time with the Rangers fans already.

Chermiti joined Rangers for £10million from Everton in the summer, with the move being pushed through by sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

Following Rangers’ 3-1 defeat to Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, Chermiti was slammed for yet another lacklustre performance.

Chermiti was out of his depth on Sunday, and former interim manager Barry Ferguson expressed his compassion for the Portuguese striker, who has faced a wave of scrutiny ever since he moved to Ibrox.

Youssef Chermiti underperforms for Rangers once again

Chermiti put a guild-edged opportunity wide in the 22nd minute after Mohamed Diomande’s lovely pass wasn’t finished from six yards out.

Writing in the print edition of the Daily Record on 5 November, Ferguson felt bad for Chermiti after he heard a chorus of boos from his own supporters at Hampden, after yet another chance went begging.

He said: “I get the criticism and I could hear it with my own ears at Hampden on Sunday after he missed a couple of big chances against Celtic.

“But I felt for the young man at the same time. He’s under a lot of pressure because of circumstances completely out of his control.

“He didn’t ask Rangers to spend £10million to get him out of Everton in the summer. But he’s the guy who gets it in the neck for the size of the transfer fee.”

Chermiti’s performance against Brann was woeful, and he is yet to seize his opportunities in the starting line-up under both Russell Martin and Danny Rohl.

Bojan Miovski was favoured over Chermiti under Martin for league games, although Rohl has placed a huge amount of faith in him during his short reign in charge.

However, it’s imperative that he needs to start repaying the faith his new manager has shown in him immediately.
