Former Celtic youth player Owen Moffat has returned to Scottish football, signing a two-year agreement with Greenock Morton after leaving Blackpool.

Moffat, a winger born in Stirling, began his football experience with Celtic’s junior programme at the age of seven. He made his senior debut for Celtic in December 2021 and was part of the squad that won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup that season — although a spectator who trained with the first team.

Under Ange Postecoglou, Moffat found first-team opportunities restricted at Celtic, culminating to his departure to Blackpool in August 2022. He joined Blackpool’s youth group on a three-year agreement but struggled to get into the main team, making 0 league games during his tenure there. To acquire additional experience, he spent the 2023-2024 season on loan to Dunfermline Athletic, where he made 28 appearances and scored three goals.

Moffat’s transfer to Morton marks a fresh start and an opportunity to distinguish himself in senior football. His stint at Dunfermline proved his talent, and Morton supporters will be interested to see how he adds to their campaign. As a player with substantial youth experience, Moffat’s full time return to Scotland might prove to be a key juncture in his career.

Celtic, on the other hand, are failing to bring through significant talent from their academy. Moffat moved for England two years ago with big aspirations but has found a dead end. Many come through the system but as of now, the Hoops are battling to make their academy count.
