Joe Mazzulla doesn’t worry about being singled out. He’s actually excited about it. The Boston Celtics, the defending NBA champions, could anticipate being the focus of attention during the 2024–25 campaign. Once the elusive Banner 18 is finally brought to TD Garden, the hunters will become the hunted.
“I hope it’s right on our forehead in between our eyes, but people are going to say the target is on our back,” the coach of the C’s stated in a recent Locked On Celtics podcast episode. “I hope I can see the red dot.”
It should come as no surprise that Mazzulla is driven for the upcoming campaign, but how can he prevent his players from growing weary of trying to do the same thing again? Tom Giles and Chris Forsberg talked about on a recent Celtics Talk Podcast edition.

“With these Celtics, I don’t worry about complacency,” Forsberg remarked. “I know that the coach was sitting there telling them what we were going to do the following year, perhaps the day after he got off that duck boat. This is how we’re going to continue. I don’t feel anxious about this group or the notion of making a downshift right away.”
Giles concurs that the Celtics will not ease up on their pressure.
“Joe Mazzulla is not gonna allow that,” he said. “For this reason, I believe he is the ideal coach for this upcoming season. The way he spun the description of the target on their back and the ferocity with which he delivered it tells you a lot about Joe Mazzulla as a person. He briefly discussed it last season, focusing on how they look for the game within the game, and he plans to keep doing so during training camp and the regular season.
“That is not a concern of mine. Because he is so dedicated and competitive, I believe he would be a great fit for them.”
