What Leeds United are now asking Georginio Rutter behind-the-scenes after £40m Brighton offer

Leeds United have been absolutely rocked by the latest news on Georginio Rutter.

Fresh on the back of a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup, news emerged that Brighton & Hove Albion had triggered Rutter’s £40 million release clause.

Brighton are said to have seen offers of £29 million and £35 million turned down, but met the terms of Rutter’s release clause before Leeds‘ tie with Boro.

With Leeds having already lost first team players Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Glen Kamara, seeing Rutter go would be an incredibly bitter pill to take.

Leeds had already been in the market for three new players in the final two weeks of the window, but Rutter’s exit would make it four. It is difficult to see how they can all be replaced effectively.

What Leeds are asking Rutter behind-the-scenes

It is said that Rutter was actually aware of Brighton’s bid even before Leeds’ match last night, but still made himself available to play, coming off the bench in the second half.

Rutter has not once agitated for a move behind-the-scenes but now faces a huge choice on whether to stay, or make the move back to the Premier League.

Leeds have already raised just shy of £100 million in player sales this summer (including Luis Sinisterra), and so clearly this is an exit they don’t need from a financial viewpoint.

As such, according to Leeds Live, the club are said to be practically ‘begging’ Rutter to stay, but eventually the ball is in his court.

The report also says a new contract is not off the table if Rutter does decide to stay, even though there is still four years left to run on his current deal.

A quick decision will certainly be needed by Rutter for all parties, as if he goes, Leeds would have a serious job replacing him in such a short space of time.

Rutter leave would be worst of the lot

Losing Summerville and Gray in one window is bad enough, but Rutter would surely be the worst of the lot.

Rutter transformed himself from zero to hero last season and built a relationship with fans not many can through both his performances and personality off the pitch.

Though Rutter’s ball retention can be a source of frustration, there is simply no one Leeds can bring in who would be able to replace what he adds.

His ability to drive past defenders and create chances make him one of the best players in the league. An attack without him or Summerville would probably rule out top two already.

Georginio Rutter has now made his choice on whether he will stay at Leeds United, or join Brighton.

Brighton activated Rutter’s £40 million release clause last night with reports saying it ran out at midnight yesterday, meaning the Seagulls got there in the nick of time.

Rutter had actually been aware of this before Leeds‘ 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, but still chose to make himself available for the game.

The 22-year-old came off the bench but could not prevent an awkward evening from taking place at Elland Road, as Leeds went crashing out of the Carabao Cup.

With news of Brighton’s offer coming to light late last night, all that was left was Rutter’s decision.Rutter makes Leeds choice after Brighton bid

Leeds have already raised a large amount of cash in player sales this summer thanks to the exits of Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray.

In fact, only Aston Villa have made more. With that in mind, Leeds were in no need to sell Rutter, but have been pretty helpless as a result of the option.

The 22-year-old has chosen he will be making the move to the South Coast, and a medical could take place in the next 72 hours.

It is said a ‘verbal agreement’ has been made between Rutter and Brighton, with the final details just needing to be clarified today before he travels down.

Who could Leeds replace Rutter with?

Leeds now face the enormous job of replacing both him and Summerville given how long they have taken to move for a winger.

It is going to be nearly impossible for Leeds to find players anywhere near as good as those, and some serious cash will need spending.

Manuel Benson and Jonathan Rowe appear to be two goals for Leeds, though the latter is looking unlikely right now.

Only a statement signing like Jack Clarke would soften the blow of the players Leeds have lost.
