Pundit tells Rangers man to consider EFL move after being ‘Flattered’ by PL transfer links

Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence will be “flattered” by ties with Ipswich Town but should transfer to Sheffield United for guaranteed game time, according to Carlton Palmer.

The Welshman has been tipped to quit Ibrox this summer, with sources stating the Tractor Boys, The Blades and Besiktas are all considering moving to capture the midfielder [Scottish Daily Mail, 10 June].

While BBC commentator Palmer believes a transfer to Portman Road may appeal to Lawrence, he concedes that a summer switch to Bramall Lane may be the better alternative as he would be guaranteed regular first-team games.

Sheffield United and Ipswich Town in transfer race for Rangers' Tom Lawrence

As stated by Football League World (10 June) he said: “Tom Lawrence has proven that he is a player who can operate at the top Championship level, and he would be a good signing for Sheffield United.

“He has picked up a few injuries in recent seasons, but he is durable, and he can play anywhere across the forward line. So, he would be a very, very nice acquisition for Sheffield United if they can get it over the line.

“I suppose the fee is not going to be massive given Tom’s age. Obviously, he would be flattered that his name has been linked to Ipswich Town, but he will be cognizant of the fact he is 30, and he would be wanting to play regular games.

“Will that be guaranteed at Ipswich Town? Maybe not and if he goes to Sheffield United under Chris Wilder, he will be guaranteed greater playing time.”

Will Rangers sell Tom Lawrence during the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

While supporters have been keen to see a number of players left Ibrox this summer following a dreadful end to the season, few fans have been calling out for Lawrence to be sold by Philippe Clement.

When he is fit and available, the Welsh international is a wonderful player to have in your side since he is capable of turning a match on its head in an instant, but those instances are regrettably very few and far between.

As Clement attempts to put his own imprint on the squad this summer, he may well believe that it would be best for everyone involved if Lawrence were to depart for a transfer back to England and also free up some cash at Ibrox.

This might well be a move to keep an eye on between now and the end of the season, especially as teams begin to consider whether or not to translate their early interest into a true transfer proposal.
