Southampton want to take transfer flop off Juve’s hands

Southampton are looking to make some more attacking signings in the summer 2024 transfer window, and they have started by looking at talented players they can sign for cheap and resurrect.

One such target is West Ham left winger Maxwel Cornet, who was a very good footballer for Lyon and scored nine Premier League goals in a season for Burnley.

However, Cornet has struggled to make an impact with West Ham due to injury, so Southampton could swoop in and take a gamble on the 27-year-old Ivorian in the hopes he can stay healthy and score some goals for them.

According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Southampton are also interested in Juventus winger Filip Kostic, who has failed to impress since moving to Turin from the Bundesliga.

In the summer 2024 transfer window, Southampton hopes to add a few more attacking players. They have begun by scouting for excellent individuals they can resuscitate and sign for a low price.

Maxwel Cornet, a left winger for West Ham who scored nine Premier League goals in a season for Burnley, was a standout player for Lyon.

But because of injuries, Cornet has found it difficult to contribute with West Ham. Southampton may decide to take a chance on the 27-year-old Ivorian in the hopes that he can stay healthy and help the team score some goals.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Southampton is also considering Juventus winger Filip Kostic, who hasn’t made an impression since joining Turin from the Bundesliga.

However, Kostic’s problems cannot be attributed to his injuries, unlike Cornet. Although Kostic is an ironman who amazes with his stamina and athleticism, he simply lacked the technical ability needed at Juventus.

Kostic lacked the defensive skills to play as a fullback, and his one-on-one playmaking and crossing accuracy prevented him from being a genuine winger.

Kostic, though, is excellent for those who don’t intend to compete in the Champions League. Southampton is comparable to Hamburg, which was Kostic’s first major Bundesliga club, a renowned team hoping to stave off humiliation and relegation.

During his time at Eintracht Frankfurt, Kostic was regarded as one of the league’s greatest wide players. He was also excellent at sprinting up and down the wing and putting in a lot of crosses.

Given that Thiago Motta is currently in control at Juventus, Southampton might sign Kostic for a low price. As long as Kostic understands that Juventus wants him gone, he might be willing to play for Southampton, a Premier League team with a rich history.

Unlike Cornet, though, Kostic can’t write off his issues due to injury. Kostic is an ironman and impresses with his athleticism and ability to stay on the pitch, but he just wasn’t at the technical level required at Juventus.

Kostic could not defend well enough to be a fullback and was too poor in one-on-ones and in the accuracy of his crossing to play further up the pitch as a true winger.

However, Kostic is great for teams that aren’t looking to make it to the Champions League. Southampton are like Hamburg, Kostic’s first big stage in the Bundesliga, a notable club looking to avoid relegation and embarrassment.

Kostic was great at running up and down the flank and putting in a high volume of crosses while at both Hamburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, and he was legitimately one of the best wide players in the league while at Frankfurt.

Southampton could sign Kostic for cheap, because Juventus want nothing to do with him now that Thiago Motta is in charge. As long as Kostic realizes Juve want him out, he could be open to joining a Premier
