According to Sky Sports, Southampton is investigating trades for a new goalkeeper in the last days of the summer transfer window, and they have highlighted Justin Bijlow and Jason Steele as possible targets.
Gavin Bazunu and Alex McCarthy are the Saints’ current starting goalies; the latter is sidelined due to injury. The former started their opening day loss against the New York Mets.
In order to increase depth and caliber in the goalkeeping department, it has been widely agreed upon at St. Mary’s that Steele and Bijlow are two possibilities that Sky Sports has mentioned.
Steele has been touted as a possible backup option should a move for Bijlow fall through. Southampton and Feyenoord have begun direct, albeit early, talks regarding a move for the Dutchman.
Both Bijlow, 26, and Steele, 34, are in the penultimate year of their Feyenoord contracts. Steele plays on the South Coast.
Bijlow Conversations Begin, Steele is Prepared
Due to Gavin Bazunu’s injury issues, Alex McCarthy is presently serving as Southampton’s starting goalkeeper. As a result, Southampton is focusing on signing a new goalkeeper during the last week of the transfer window.
Sky Sports has identified two players the club is considering: Justin Bijlow of Feyenoord and Jason Steele of Brighton. The Saints have started initial discussions with the Dutchman.
In the unlikely event that a move for the 26-year-old is not successful, Steele has also been mentioned as a possible choice. At the Amex Stadium, the 34-year-old is currently playing a similar position as McCarthy, covering for the injured Bart Verbruggen. If he signed, he might have a similar position at Southampton, but it might fall to Bijlow to challenge him head-to-head for the top slot.
Bijlow is a Holland international goalkeeper who has eight caps for Die Oranje during his career. He plays goalkeeping with Feyenoord.
Ramsdale Also Taking Into Account Saints
According to The Athletic, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, a free agent, is another prospect that Southampton has considered.
Since David Raya joined The Emirates last season, the English goalkeeper has fallen behind the Spaniard in the starting lineup. As he looks to play for the first team, his name has been circulating throughout the Premier League.
