Sheffield Wednesday should go for 18-goal play-off loser if they cannot get Ike Ugbo

Sheffield Wednesday have already began their hunt of a new striker.

Sheffield Wednesday are nearing the summer transfer market, which begins as the Euros takes off next week.

While Danny Rohl will be in Germany working as a commentator for ITV, the Owls will continue seeking for a new striker to improve their faltering attack.

Wednesday recorded one of the lowest goal tallies last season, but were substantially bolstered by the loan arrival of Ike Ugbo in January.

After netting seven times, the club are anxious to get him back, but a return is looking increasingly doubtful.

Wednesday have already been linked with previous target Mika Biereth again, but they are also set to face tough competition for his signature too.

While the Owls will be glad the moon they escaped sliding down to League One, they might maybe consider signing up a player who truly excelled in the third tier last year.

Sheffield Wednesday should swoop for Devante Cole

While the Yorkshire team would need sign more than one striker to provide quality and depth, one player they might investigate is Devante Cole.

After raking up 16 goal contributions in the 2020-21 season for Motherwell, Cole earned himself a transfer to Championship team Barnsley.

The striker failed to impress in his first season, but has been on fire since their relegation.

Cole has plundered 33 goals and six assists throughout two campaigns in League One, making a significant impact as The Tykes reached back-to-back play-offs.

They were knocked out by Bolton in the semi-finals last month though, and as an a consequence, Cole was released at the conclusion of his contract.

Free and available, the 29-year-old is certain to garner plenty of interest this summer. The attacker has previously been linked with the likes of Middlesbrough and Swansea and Stoke, while Carlton Palmer expects there will be ‘a queue’ for his signing.

Can he experience a similar return in the Championship?

While not the most prolific in the Championship, Cole could really build on his success with Barnsley and have a second try at the championship.

Both Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo had struggled in the second tier before, but Danny Rohl had them blazing and they made a major difference to the final stages of the season.

It appears a win-win situation for the Owls. If he joins and scores goals, then it is a major coup. If he stumbles, then at least he didn’t cost a thing.

Though Cole may not be first-choice, he might show to be tremendous competition for whoever is brought in as the primary guy.
