Sheffield Wednesday must look back on Derby County deadline day deal with regret: View

Sheffield Wednesday had a memorable but close relegation struggle in 2020–21, and their chances of staying up were not helped by the loan signing of Jack Marriott.

Before the season even began, Wednesday’s situation wasn’t good; the EFL docked them 12 points, which was ultimately lowered to six.

After spending three seasons with the Rams, Marriott was seeking for a fresh challenge away from Derby County. On August transfer deadline day of 2020, the striker completed a loan deal with the Owls.

With Wayne Rooney, Martyn Waghorn, Colin Kazim-Richards, and Morgan Whittaker among Derby’s attacking options, it seemed possible that Marriott’s playing time would be restricted.

He came to Hillsborough to compete against players like Josh Windass, Elias Kachunga, Jordan Rhodes, and Callum Paterson.

After a disappointing season that culminated in the drop, Wednesday’s first three managers, Garry Monk, recruited the striker on a loan.

After displaying clinical performances during the Rams’ 2018–19 Premier League drive, Marriott had a dismal 2019–20 season. We had hoped that he would return the favor on Wednesday, but that is not how events have now transpired.
