Sheffield Wednesday boss explains what his side got wrong in heavy Sunderland defeat

Danny Rohl acknowledged that Sheffield Wednesday had given too much away in the first half, but he will not let the loss to Sunderland get to him too much.

In an attempt to build on their convincing victory against Plymouth Argyle on the first day of the season, Wednesday got off to a fast start at the Stadium of Light, but they were beaten by a cunning set piece routine from the home team. Following the break, Eliezer Mayenda scored his second goal of the match to wrap up the onslaught, giving Sunderland a 3-0 advantage.

The manager of Wednesday emphasized that it was crucial not to overreact to the loss in light of his team’s great performance over an extended period of time under his watch. However, he believed that his squad had given in too readily to Sunderland’s high-pressing style, with the home club’s midfield trio taking the glory in that particular match.

“For me it is clear, I was not in Disneyland and dreaming for more after the win against Plymouth,” Rohl stated. Both yesterday and today, I was and am in reality. Although my team and I have been making progress in our goals over the last few days, we did not fully commit to our game plan today.

“Our opponent is also to blame for this [loss], and we must never lose sight of the fact that good players will always go up against formidable opponents. They performed admirably today, and our focus is on improving and learning more. We begin getting ready for Leeds on Tuesday. We’ll give it another go when I see a team that can compete with a formidable Leeds team and is once again nasty.

“We are aware of their man-to-man press, particularly with this individual. Our harmful acts came from playing from behind rather than in front, and the match plan made it plain that we wanted to assault them. We have to and can learn from this game; they [Sunderland] performed well. It is always simple to be together after a win, but it’s also important to stick together, learn from the setback, and move on.

“It’s important when you concede a goal to get through the next minutes,” Rohl stated.

“You might argue that our response was good if we had scored after Svante Ingelsson’s goal was disallowed, but we must obviously learn from this—13 minutes, three goals, and then it’s tough. My crew will learn, I’m sure. We felt we were a little bit closer to the next phase, so today was a huge letdown.”
