After working as a professional football player in mainland Europe since 2021, Millar spent the previous season on loan at Championship opponent Preston North End. He had previously played for Basel in Switzerland.
Nevertheless, Millar has not been expected to return to Deepdale despite having a somewhat successful season in Lancashire the previous time around. The Canadian will not be rejoining Preston North End, according to director Peter Ridsdale, who gave the following explanation to the Lancashire Post: “Liam has been very honest with us, saying he loves the club and will come back tomorrow, but wants to play left wing.”
“And we have said we love him and want him back tomorrow, but we want him to play left wing-back.”

It may seem weird for Millar to join Sheffield United given that he does not intend to play out of position in the upcoming season.
The 24-year-old will be joining the Blades in the upcoming weeks, according to Adam Oxley of BBC Sheffield. All paperwork should be finished when he finishes playing for Canada in the Copa América.
But when Walder returned to Bramall Lane in December, he mostly stuck to the 3-5-2 formation that got Sheffield United close to playing in Europe in 2019–20. Though the 3-5-2 was used again in the latter fe w months of 2023–2024, it was unsuccessful in keeping the team in the top division. It is unclear if Wilder will stick to his overlapping center-back strategy, which has worked so well in the Championship in the past.
With a small change in setup, Millar could be able to play in his natural position and have more opportunities to score and assist frequently.
By switching to a 3-4-3, Millar has the security of playing more forward without having to cover for Wilder defensively, while Wilder can still employ his earlier strategies. Alternatively, Millar can demonstrate his offensive abilities and stay higher up the pitch by switching to a more conventional 4-3-3 formation.
Given that Wilder has thus far in his career come to be associated with a cutting-edge and intriguing tactical perspective, both prospective alterations will be consequential. A shift like this might take some time, but it might catch rival teams off guard as they prepare for a more conventional Wilder squad.
