After Southampton’s loss to Newcastle United on Saturday due to an Alex McCarthy howler, Russell Martin is more aware than ever that he needs to solve his goalkeeping position.

Ever since Gavin Bazunu suffered an Achilles injury in April, Southampton supporters have been worrying about how the goalkeeper situation will be resolved.

Prior to the injury, Bazunu was unquestionably Russell Martin’s top player; Southampton’s style of play is greatly influenced by the Irishman’s skill with the ball at his feet.

Alex McCarthy, an experienced goalie, filled in for the remainder of the previous campaign and was awarded a new contract for his outstanding showing in the playoffs.

But the 34-year-old’s footwork is clearly flawed, which is why Southampton is looking to replace the number one this summer.

McCarthy’s gaffe cost the Saints dearly in their Premier League opener against Newcastle, and it only served to emphasize how urgent it is to sign a replacement ‘keeper before the end of the transfer season on Saturday.
