Rivals of Leeds United plan to use a £100 million transaction to imitate the ownership structure.

Leeds United’s rivals, Southampton, are set to follow a similar ownership strategy with a significant £100 million deal. This strategy, resembling the one implemented by Leeds’ owners 49ers Enterprises, involves the acquisition of a controlling stake by a new investor. Dragan Solak, a Serbian businessman and founder of United Group, has completed a £100 million takeover of Southampton through his investment firm, Sport Republic. This deal gives Solak a majority stake in the club, with former owner Gao Jisheng selling his shares while Katharina Liebherr retains her minority shareholding.

This approach by Southampton mirrors the multi-club ownership model seen with Manchester City’s City Football Group, aiming to leverage synergies across different clubs and markets. Such strategies are becoming more common as clubs seek to enhance their financial stability and competitive edge through diverse investments and expanded global presence.
