Ange Postecoglou, currently at the leadership of Tottenham Hotspur, is apparently casting an eye back towards Glasgow, with the potential young star Daniel Kelly firmly on his radar.The Australian manager, who traded Celtic for Spurs last year, is thought to be closely following Kelly’s progress, with potential intentions to transfer the midfielder to North London.Kelly, who was granted his first-team debut by Brendan Rodgers this season has since earned a reputation for himself inside the Celtic ranks.
Despite not starring under Postecoglou during his stay at Celtic, Kelly’s talent was no secret, with excellent assessments from his performances in the junior setup reaching the manager’s ears.Now, with Kelly in negotiations over a new deal at Celtic, the Daily Record reports that Postecoglou could be eager to rejoin with the teenager at Tottenham. However, this chase won’t be a stroll in the park, as Premier League heavyweights Manchester United have also indicated interest.From July, Kelly is free to engage with other teams as he approaches the last six months of his term. Celtic are desperate to maintain their local talent, giving enhanced conditions to ward off competitors. However, the draw of better money and the glamour of Premier League football would be harder to refuse. Reports claim that Tottenham might lure Kelly with a lucrative £9,000-a-week deal, a number Celtic would struggle to match.Should Kelly decide for pastures new, Celtic would just be owing a minimal training fee for the midfielder, pocketing a compensation sum of about £490,000. Rodgers has showed great trust in the kid this season, handing him five additional matches following his debut, demonstrating the club’s conviction in his future.The perception at Celtic over the past five years is that they just can’t compete with the other leagues when it comes to their young prospects. The bhoys have had their pockets picked on multiple occasions whether it is Bayern Munich, Liverpool or Man City.Celtic need to build a clear USP where they are considered to be giving kids an opportunity if they’re good enough. The trouble is, the ones talented enough don’t remain around long enough to have that influence. Clubs are continuously attempting to identify the next big star far before they gain any form of public name. Man City want to acquire a player for pennies today rather than £50m five years down the line.There’s no guarantee Kelly remains, but we sincerely hope Brendan Rodgers and the board can get a contract done.
