Rangers last-ditch deal for Sam Edozie failed over £1m payment to Southampton

The Sun reports that Sam Edozie’s potential loan to Rangers fell through because Southampton demanded money for the transfer.

Prior to the deal falling through, The Sun reported on August 31 that Southampton wanted the Gers to pay a £1 million loan fee on top of Edozie’s £30,000 weekly earnings in order to bring him north to Ibrox.

Even though a deal had supposedly been agreed upon earlier in the day, Edozie had apparently been eager to join Philippe Clement’s team in an eleventh-hour move from the Premier League club [David Edgar, 30 August]. However, it was not to be.

Rangers have the right to move Sam Edozie without being held hostage.

Even though Edozie was obviously a player Clement believed might have made a major quality addition to his team this season, the Gers had already committed a substantial financial commitment on Deadline Day.

It would have been a significant commitment for the Light Blues to pay over £2 million in loan fees and salary for Edozie, especially considering that they had just spent an estimated £3.3 million on Nedim Bajrami [Gianluca Di Marzio,

Neraysho Kishanwirjo also joined on a season-long loan, while Scott Wright and Todd Cantwell left for Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers, respectively, on permanent contracts.

But the trades of the latter two are said to have only brought in a combined £800,000. Since the Gers aren’t exactly flush with cash, Southampton’s demands for Edozie will undoubtedly have been excessive.

Although Clement is optimistic that Bajrami’s arrival will compensate for his missed opportunity to sign Edozie, the last-minute nature of the Gers’ chase indicates that the Saints winger was never a primary priority.
