BREAKING NEWS: Paul Warne holds double Derby County transfer call amid ‘creepy’ admission

After speaking with a player this week in an attempt to add one or more players to his team, Paul Warne has disclosed the extent he will go to in order to prevail in a Derby County trade war.

A striker and a midfielder are at the top of Derby’s priority list as they look to bolster their roster before the transfer market closes at the end of the month. In an attempt to bolster the eight summer recruits he has already made, they are both probably loan transfers rather than long-term commitments.

After the player made presentations to him, his agent, and the club’s loans manager this week, he is still waiting to hear if he has been given the go-ahead. And Warne revealed how, while acknowledging he won’t go too far, he attempts to win their hearts and minds.

He said to Derbyshire Live, “There are times when you have to swim the channel.” You have a lot on your plate. I was going to drive to the residence of one of the players I was seeing; he lived quite far away. However, you must make every effort to convey the message, “This is the culture; this is how we play.” This week, I spoke with a player on two Zoom calls. The first was with the head of recruitment and his agency.

“The head of recruitment, the manager of loans, and the player were in the following one. You have two lengthy presentations to complete. I believed I had the X-Factor and had the golden ticket. I went from eleven clubs to four, but I’m still not sure if I’ve won the award. You have to put a lot of effort into your performances, as well as into your training, playing, fit, and my potential to be of assistance.

Fundamentally, they want to know how you’re going to advance their careers because they want to rejoin their parent clubs and make the squad, especially if it’s a loan. I always tell them to “phone them up” after giving them the names of every player I have ever coached that is in their position. Did I assist them? It’s okay if you don’t sign if I didn’t.

“However, simply check to see if the coaching staff and I are who we claim we are. Do they receive this kind of training? Do they really think this is how people should act? Is this the gaffer’s obsession? Do you really know that the gaffer acts in this way?

“Try to learn as much as you can about us. I attempt to win their hearts by being honest with them about everything. There’s a fine line between being excited and creepy, so that’s not easy. I was thinking I couldn’t do it until I learned the other day that a certain manager had been calling the player every day for almost three weeks. It’s strange because, upon reading this, folks will probably think that sounds nice. I can’t play for that guy, personally.”

When he was a player, Warne recalled how he once turned down a move because he felt that managers were too demanding.

“I’ll never forget the time a manager called and said, ‘Warney, look, I want to sign you.'” That was back in the good old days, before there were seven layers of protection and you could talk to a player,” he said. “I’ll probably give you a two-year term on this, he added, and he asked, What do you think? I informed him that I will give him a call after talking to my girlfriend.

“In response, he enquired as to what it was you needed to discuss with your partner. She lives with me and is essentially my partner, so I went very well, oddly enough, and it just allows me some time to reflect. What have you got to think about, he asked? I informed him that it had to do with what he had just said, and strangely enough, I became angry. Do you want it or not? He went quite nicely. I told you to quit it.

“If you’re pushing it on me and not giving me a day to consider it, then you’re not for me,” I remarked. He calls me the following day and asks, “What do you think?” Well, I told you yesterday, I thought. I was unable to please him. He was very intense.

“I attempt to sign guys in the same way that I would like to be signed as a player in my mind. I respect values and there are folks I like. However, you have to consider what he wants, which makes you second-guess yourself. A daily phone call would make certain players feel extremely important. However, I just cannot support a player who is one of the twenty-five and so needy; I do not want them.

“Once you get them in the building, everyone will be happy that you signed them, but difficulties will arise in two or three weeks. Because everyone is different and finding the right balance isn’t always easy, some managers use a whiteboard to help them during their presentations. I email them videos of us playing, and we have a little conversation after that.

Some bosses don’t even make an effort to intervene. The managers only wants the financial transaction to be completed so he can simply show up and shake hands—that sounds like a dream—and the recruiters handle it. However, we must make every effort to draw as many people as possible.”
