NEWS UPDATE: Rival clubs circle veteran Swan as trade hope grows

Veteran Sydney midfielder Luke Parker is “open” to exploring his trade possibilities at the end of the Swans’ 2024 campaign.

The 2012 premiership player is contracted for one more year, but given the depth of Sydney’s elite midfield, could seek options at a new club, where a weekly senior spot would likely be assured.

Parker struggled to keep a spot in the Swans side early in the season, after he broke his arm in a pre-season match..

The 31-year-old did not crack back into Sydney’s side until round 18, following a six-week ban for a dangerous bump in the VFL, on Frankston’s Josh Smith.

Smith received serious facial injuries, including a broken cheekbone, as a result of the hit.

Swans to appeal Parker ban

Upon return to the AFL side, Parker collected 13 disposals and made two goals in the Swans’ 79-point thumping of North Melbourne.

He has played every game since his return, but may lose his spot come playoffs, as he continues to fill a small forward role left by the injured Tom Papley.

Now, AFL.com.au’s Cal Twomey has lifted the lid on talks likely being had at the SCG.

“My understanding is the former Swans skipper is open to exploring a move to a rival club at the end of the year,” he said on Wednesday.

Luke Parker celebrates a goal for Sydney in round 22, 2024.
“Has only played five games, has been squeezed out of the middle.

“Does he get squeezed out of the forward line when Tom Papley gets back in the coming weeks?

“Is there a taker? I think he’s gettable, it’s just a matter of if there’s a home there for him.”

Back in May, Nine’s Matthew Lloyd urged Parker to consider joining a club like North Melbourne, which is in serious need of a mature-aged recruit to bolster the middle.

Luke Parker of Sydney could seek a trade after the 2024 season.

“I’m thinking to myself, if I’m Luke, ‘I’m trying to get to a club next year … can I get to a top four club?'” he said on Nine’s Footy Classified.

“You get an injury and suddenly (Justin) McInerney, (Errol) Gulden, (Chad) Warner, (Isaac) Heeney, all these guys start to go past you, in a way.

“(James) Rowbottom goes past him, Taylor Adams comes in, he’s gone past him, James Jordon’s gone past him.

“He can change. It’s hard, because North are suffering. You like to be around Luke Parker, because he’s as tough as they come.”
