Newly promoted Premier League side set their sights on Newcastle fan favourite in statement £21m deal

Newly promoted Ipswich Town have already made one big statement of intent by securing the long-term future of in-demand head coach Kieran McKenna – and now the Tractor Boys are planning to make another eye-catching statement by targeting Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron, according to reports from TeamTalk.

The publication understands that the Magpies are prepared to listen to bids for as many as four new players as Eddie Howe looks to gather finances to once again develop a side that is capable of qualifying for the Champions League.

Almiron was a vital part of that victory last time around, and the former club-record acquisition, scored an outstanding 11 goals in the 2022/23 campaign with the bulk of those coming during a profitable stretch in October.

Premier League side target Newcastle ace with 177 Prem appearances

At the prime of his abilities the Paraguayan was hailed for his relentless workrate, his fantastic pace and his ability to cut inside on his left foot and at times generate moments of magic. However, in more recent times those moments have been few and far between and rumours at the close of the January transfer window indicated that Newcastle were open to listen to proposals from Saudi Arabia, with Al Shabab apparently proposing £17m for the winger.

That trade failed to materialise at the time due to Howe’s £30m valuation of the player and the frailties within Newcastle’s squad with Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy both battling with injury troubles at the time. However, TeamTalk report that the Magpies have cut their asking price to £21m which has spurred interest from Ipswich who are seeking to construct a club that can survive in the top-flight in their first season back in 22 years.

Transfer guru Ben Jacobs thinks McKenna is eyeing players with Premier League experience to boost their case and claims that Almiron who has made 177 top-flight games in Black and White might be the answer to their questions.

He said: “I’m told that there is Premier League interest in Almiron as well and Ipswich may be one to watch. Ipswich’s number one goal would be to bring in Omari Hutchison from Chelsea, but you simply don’t know, things may change,” Jacobs said.

“With Almiron and Ipswich, that one is one to watch.”

Should Almiron be declared surplus to requirements next year it is also predicted that the East Anglia team might face fresh competition from Saudi Arabia along with Spanish club Atletico Madrid.
