The ‘Terrace Talk’ series from Football League World features the perspectives of our FLW Fan Pundits on a variety of topics, including teams, players, managers, possible signings, and breaking news.
Over the last 12 months, Romain Esse has emerged as one of Millwall’s most vital players. The Lions have been advised to expect at least £10 million for his services in the event that a potential transfer request is made in the near future.
Esse has been a standout and has often shown his ability over the previous year since he officially stepped into the first squad. Millwall has not had a fantastic start to the season, winning just one of their first four league games.
The 19-year-old made his professional debut for Millwall against Watford in December 2022. Since then, he has made 45 appearances for the team, the most of which have come off the bench. However, this season, as Harris’ team looks to improve on their 13th-place finish from the previous campaign, he has established himself as a regular starter.
A Millwall supporter made a transfer claim on Romain Esse.
Esse’s previous contract was about to expire this summer, so the club made a crucial move to protect his “long-term” future by having him sign a contract extension at the end of August.
The 19-year-old is now the Lions’ most valuable player, according to FLW’s resident Millwall fan analyst Chris Chapman of the Chat With Chaps YouTube channel, and it would take a big sum to lure him away from The Den anytime soon.
“Romain Esse is our most valuable asset,” Chris said to Football League World.
“This 19-year-old came through our youth system, and we were able to sign him to a new deal as recently as last week.
“I honestly think he’s worth anything from £10 million to £20 million.
“We’ve sold a player for a record £8 million, so it almost makes me laugh to say that, but I really think he has what it takes to reach the very, very top.”
“Although he is left-footed and can play anywhere in the attacking line, he currently plays on the right side of a front three.
“Aside from his apparent aptitude and technical abilities, he has recently grown in size and stature and improved his defensive play, which is just what a Neil Harris team needs.
Really, have a look at this boy. He is a member of the England under-19 team and is becoming better and better.
“Within the next two seasons, I promise you he will be playing in the Premier League.”
“He’s our best player, and I believe it would take at least £10 million to get him to leave the team.”
Thanks to Neil Harris’s supervision, Romain Esse is thriving.
Esse has started all six of Millwall’s league games this season, starting five of them. He has scored twice, both in the EFL Cup against Portsmouth and in the league against Bristol City.
Since making his debut for the Lions in late 2022, he has only started seven games across all competitions. Therefore, it is evident that manager Harris is giving him the opportunity to demonstrate that he can be his go-to man for goals and assists as Millwall looks to get into the top half of the standings this season.
As he recently signed a new contract, he stated that “all (he’s) ever known is Millwall,” which made the decision easier. It’s evident that the club prioritised his signing a new contract before January, when other clubs would have been free to approach him about a move because his current contract is set to expire in the summer.
Other clubs around the nation have taken notice of his skills after Football Insider revealed in the January transfer window that Millwall had received formal approaches from both Burnley and Hull City for his services. However, no deal was ever finalized, and he has since developed even more, his value rising with each passing week.
Esse is expected to play a major role for the team this season, thus signing him for the following several years would undoubtedly need a record-breaking sell from Millwall.
