In their Nations League opening at Windsor Park on Thursday night, Northern Ireland defeated Luxembourg 2-0 with an assist from George Saville.

In the sixteenth minute, Saville set up Daniel Ballard with a low free-kick that the former Millwall loanee diverted home.

Five minutes earlier, Paddy McNair had given Michael O’Neill’s team the lead, and the hosts were off to the perfect start in League C Group 3.

“We exploited set-pieces and had excellent game management,” O’Neill remarked.

This morning, we worked with the players on the field and in the analysis room for about an hour. It’s not something you receive every time.

“That’s something we need to work on, and tonight we proved that.”

On Sunday, Northern Ireland travels to Bulgaria.

O’Neill continued, “It’s significant. We will be in a good position if we travel to Bulgaria and achieve a result because the other game ended in a tie.
