Middlesbrough will be hoping that in 2024–25, Michael Carrick lives up to his early managerial potential and leads the Teessiders back to the Premier League.
Boro has only secured three points out of a potential six thus far. A disappointing loss away at Derby County offset an outstanding triumph against Swansea City on the opening day.
Between those outcomes, Boro humiliated Leeds United 3-0 at Elland Road in the midweek EFL Cup, much to the amazement of many.
Josh Coburn, the striker, stood out among many others in that resounding victory over the Whites last Wednesday, constantly posing a threat to Leeds’ defense.
The third goal of the game and a lovely assist for Delano Burgzorg’s goal that gave Boro a 2-0 lead earlier in the game proved that the Boro academy graduate’s efforts had paid off.
He has only played five minutes in the league this season, though, and since Millwall is interested in signing the 21-year-old, it’s possible that he will be leaving Riverside Stadium before the transfer deadline of August 30.
Should he leave, Carrick and the Boro board may regret their choice because Coburn has demonstrated the ability to warrant a regular berth.
Michael Carrick might not need Josh Coburn as much because of Middlesbrough’s depth of strikers.
The strikers ahead of Coburn in the hierarchy will be the biggest factor affecting his future at Middlesbrough.
After joining from Atalanta previous season, Emannuel Latte Lath scored 16 goals in 30 Championship games, solidifying his position as Carrick’s leading scorer.
Before today, Coburn’s sole opponent was Marcus Forss, but Tommy Conway’s presence in the Northeast might be the last straw for the young Teessider.
That Conway will be Carrick’s third-choice striker is simply not possible, given that he signed him for an alleged £4.5 million from Bristol City.
Because of this, the 21-year-old former Bristol Rovers loanee may be let go because he is a very marketable asset.
Coburn is the greatest alternative because few teams would consider signing the Finnish forward due to Forss’s present injury.
The teenage striker is also ready for regular starts at this point in his career.
Even after signing Macaulay Langstaff, Millwall might be the team that gives him this chance for regular playing time, and considering his lack of playing time at the Riverside, it would be difficult to turn down that possible move.
