Micky Mellon has not ruled out returning to Oldham Athletic to work with players like Mike Fondop and Dan Gardner.
The two were two of four players that had no contract expiration this summer and could still access Boundary Park.
Devarn Green and Harrison McGahey find themselves in a similar situation to Gardner and Fondop, despite the fact that Hallam Hope was released.
They are free to join other clubs, but whether or not Latics can afford to keep them depends largely on whether they are still available when the 2024–2025 season begins.
Mellon, though, acknowledged that he was keeping an open mind about the quartet.
“There’s nothing off the table,” the Lakers general manager declared.
“You have five days after the season ends to let them know if you plan to sign them.
“They have a contract that expires at the end of June, so I’m not sure why that restriction is in place.
“We wanted to have a look at everything we had, and that was disappointing because some of the guys we haven’t re-signed I think they were the best players for us last season, the likes of Dan Gardner and Mike Fondop.”
“Nothing is off the table, and we will bring the best players possible for Oldham when the time comes for us to make decisions,” Mellon continued.
We may still sign them back if they don’t sign with another team before we make our decision.”
On the last day of the season, Fondop scored twice in the 3-2 loss to Wealdstone at home to bring his total to ten goals. This gave him double digits for the campaign. If not for the four-match suspension he received after his somewhat severely unsuccessful appeal against his second red card of the season was upheld, it very well may have been more.
Gardner tried to keep Latics in the play-off race by putting in some man-of-the-match performances and displaying his love for the team he has now served twice.
