After waiting until the very last minute to recruit Steve Cooper as a new center forward this summer, Leicester City managed to sign Odsonne Edouard on a season-long loan from Crystal Palace on Transfer Deadline Day.
After his contract expired early in the summer, Kelechi Iheanacho left Leicester City, and Jamie Vardy was sidelined due to injury after the first preseason friendly.
The need for a striker signing became urgent after Patson Daka suffered an injury in the final preseason game, but Vardy surprised Steve Cooper by unexpectedly returning to fitness in time to start the season’s opening game against Tottenham Hotspur and score.
Daka’s ankle injury will keep him out for several months, but Cooper obviously didn’t think much of Tom Cannon, so he was permitted to sign a loan with Stoke City.
In addition, Eddie Nketiah’s arrival from Arsenal makes it easy to understand why the French forward felt he had to leave Selhurst Park in order to play this season.
Leicester was able to strengthen their front line without having to pay an outrageous sum, thus this worked out nicely for them.

Nevertheless, given Palace’s last-minute action before authorizing the loan, they may have to attempt to make Edouard’s move permanent next summer.
Journalist Alan Nixon claims on his Patron page that Odsonne Edouard, a loanee from Leicester City, signed a three-year contract at Crystal Palace before to his departure.
“The shock contract was arranged prior to the Frenchman joining the Foxes, but it will safeguard Palace upon his return in the summer of 2021.”
The contract extension shattered Leicester City’s hopes of landing Edouard at a reduced fee.
Leicester would have hoped that, should Edouard, 26, prove to be a success at the King Power, they could grab a cheap deal next summer, since his Palace contract was set to expire in 2026.

Although it makes sense that Palace would want to safeguard their asset, it is a little odd that Edouard and the club felt this was the wisest course of action considering how little of an impact Edouard will likely have going forward.
Vardy will always be the star player, but at 37, it was critical to find a replacement to ease the veteran’s workload.
Edouard will be able to accomplish that, but given that he has only scored 18 goals in 95 Premier League games at Palace, Leicester supporters will be hoping the former Celtic player can show growth in front of goal.

Given how much attention he garnered after his little debut, the 22-year-old may be able to start right away.
