Getting a new central defender is now Pompey’s top objective as the transfer window closes.
Additionally, after being left off of their squad for last night’s Carabao Cup loss at AFC Wimbledon, George Edmundson, a target for Ipswich Town, has taken a step closer to leaving Portman Road.
Pompey still has a significant interest in Edmundson, a 27-year-old who is still desired ahead of tomorrow night’s 11 p.m. deadline.
However, it seems the Blues will reach far and wide in their recruitment efforts to find the defensive reinforcement they believe is necessary for the Championship this season.
And it is expected to cause some “plate-spinning” over the last few hours of the summer session, as several options are investigated for what is thought to be an essential addition.
Ben Nelson of Leicester City is reportedly a possibility, while Bristol City is also showing interest in the 20-year-old.
Tuesday night’s 4-0 Carabao Cup victory at Tranmere saw Nelson not used as a substitute for the Foxes; the England under-20 international may opt to leave on loan.
Another option is Australian sensation Hayden Matthews, who is reportedly the target of a £900,000 bid from Sydney FC; however, this transaction might just be a push to get over the finish line in this window.
Edmundson was not involved at Plough Lane, thus it appears that his situation could alter before the window closes, even though manager Kieran McKenna made ten changes for the penalty shootout loss.
That follows the decision to give the former Rangers player a late cameo at Manchester City on Saturday, which now seems to have been an emotional one and elevated Edmundson to the Premier League at the team he grew up watching.
Another player is Paul Dummett. Despite Pompey’s consideration, manager John Mousinho has decided against making a move for the former Newcastle United player.
This summer has proven to be another active recruiting season for the Blues, as they have signed 14 players.
Last night, Mark O’Mahony, a striker on a season-long loan from Brighton, became the newest member.
This means Pompey has plenty of attacking options, but Mousinho has said the football team will monitor any late “curveballs” that may surface before Friday’s 11 p.m. deadline.
