A former Pompey player has signed for his second club of the year, his 21st overall in a career filled with travel.

Greg Halford is 39 years old, but his love of football and his desire to stay on the pitch don’t seem to be waning.

The adaptable player has signed for Blyth Spartans of the Northern Premier League, becoming David Stockdale’s first acquisition as interim manager following the departure of Nobby Solano.

Halford, who began the season with Southern League Premier Central Bishop’s Stortford, has also played for Sunderland and Nottingham Forest during his travels. However, he chose to move to the North East.

He was brought on for an instant debut for the Spartans’ trip to Prescot Cables, but they ended up in second place after losing 1-0 due to a free kick in the ninetieth minute.

Nevertheless, after a challenging start to the season, manager Stockdale is optimistic that the former Blues player will help them move up the ladder.

“Greg’s a good, experienced utility player who has played everywhere over his career,” Stockdale stated on the team’s official website.

“I’m thrilled that he agreed to join us. He’s all about bringing in people who understand the game and helping the young lads through.”

Halford made 77 appearances and scored 12 goals during his two successful seasons at Fratton Park.

Steve Cotterill was first signed by the Blues in October 2010 on a season-long loan from Wolves; following the end of the loan, the Blues made the agreement permanent.

Encouraged by the CSI takeover and with extra cash in hand, Pompey spent about £1 million for the three-year contract midfielder or defender.

However, all of the first team players had to be sold off in the summer of 2012 due to the club’s latest financial collapse, which forced them to enter administration once more.

Consequently, on the same day that David Norris joined Leeds in July 2012, Halford left in a cheap deal to Nottingham Forest.

Additionally, Halford has played for Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Pompey, Colchester, Braintree, Aylesbury, Reading, Sunderland, Charlton, Sheffield United, Brighton, Rotherham, Birmingham, Cardiff, Aberdeen, Southend, Waterford, Billericay, Hashtag United, and Bishop’s Stortford.
