Joe Hart stated that the PGMOL had made the decision-making and procedure surrounding the controversial penalty incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Everton’s match against Brighton more clear.
The Toffees forward was given a spot kick after Lewis Dunk challenged him in the area, but referee Simon Hooper changed his mind after using VAR.
There was some misunderstanding since it seemed the official wasn’t seeing a replay on the pitch-side screen, but former Manchester City goalkeeper Hart clarified that he was utilizing a backup screen while commentating on Match of the Day on August 17.
“A penalty was a fair decision if you see how it is (in real time),” Hart remarked, “I think we all agreed upon that at the time.”
“We’ve spoken with the PGMOL because we noticed that the VAR was being used a little differently. In this instance, we observe that Calvert-Lewin is standing on Dunk’s foot rather than approaching him, which causes him to trip and fall.
There seems to be a little bit of misunderstanding here because the VAR screen wasn’t showing, but we were told there was a backup screen available for him to view, decide, and reverse. I believe he made the right choice.
