Ipswich Town: Blues reportedly in talks for midfielder Cameron Puertas

It has been claimed that Ipswich Town is in negotiations to sign Union Saint-Gilloise midfielder Cameron Puertas.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri disclosed that the 25-year-old has been pressuring the Belgian team to let him go, citing his lack of training and the fact that he would miss this weekend’s game against Charleroi. “An agreement with a Premier League club is imminent,” he continued, referring to what sudinfo.be believes to be Arsenal.

According to the source, the Blues are in talks for a €15 million (about £12.8 million) transaction, which might be expedited by USG’s midweek Champions League exit, even though an offer from Saudi Arabia is on the table.

Puertas, a natural no. 8, can play on the left or in a more advanced midfield position. In 40 league games the previous season, he recorded 11 goals and 17 assists, which enabled his team to advance to the Europa Conference League knockout stages.

He was born in Switzerland and is only a Spanish citizen by virtue of his parents. His senior career began at Lausanne-Sport, then in 2022 he moved to Belgium. This season’s finish marks the expiration of his current contract.

This is a very logical approach for Ipswich if they are intending to hire overseas. With an extremely impressive return in terms of goals and assists, Puertas is unquestionably one of Belgium’s best players. Although £12.8 million is a lot, he is still young enough to still have a lot of potential.

It would be risky, of course. Even if he has a fairly broad European pedigree, there’s no assurance that he’d develop into a good Premier League football player. There’s also a noticeable difference between the Belgian Pro League and the highest level of English football.

What role does he play? That is the actual query. As Jens Cajuste and Kalvin Phillips get closer to moving to Portman Road, there isn’t much room in central midfield. He could always play at number ten, but if Sammie Szmodics signs, it looks doubtful. On the left, he most likely wouldn’t be the favored choice either.

Although it’s unclear if this link contains anything, he appears to be the kind of player the Blues will be after. Nevertheless, Tavolieri, who initially revealed Puertas’ intention to quit, thinks that the team that is approaching an agreement is not Ipswich.
