Ipswich Town: Tom Lawrence linked with Portman Road return

The 30-year-old winger, who scored 11 goals for the Blues when borrowed from Leicester City in 2016/17, is now headed into the final year of his contract at Scottish club Rangers.

Today’s report states that Turkish club Besiktas, led by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the man who brought Lawrence to Ibrox from Derby in 2022, has made Lawrence a target, but that he is ‘also receiving interest from his old club Ipswich Town’.

Lawrence has endured an injury-plagued two seasons at Rangers, scoring just six goals in 23 starts and 18 sub-appearances.

Stu’s verdict

As it is, Town’s striker support unit is made up of just four players: Wes Burns, Conor Chaplin, Nathan Broadhead, and Marcus Harness; therefore, additions are essential.

There’s certainly fire in Lawrence’s belly. Speaking in September, he said, “These are my peak years, and my body feels fine; it was simply a freak injury that knocked me out for a year. My body is completely healthy, and I simply want to get back to playing football. I know what I can do. Every time you step onto the pitch, you have something to prove, and I don’t think that ever stops.”

Personally, though, I don’t think he is the answer—even as a moderately experienced squad player—as the Blues climb up to the big time. Yes, he’s capable of individual moments of magic, but those are countered by poor on-field discipline and a predilection for diving.

My understanding is that this is another transfer report in which Ipswich’s name is being used to attempt to stimulate interest and further negotiations.
