Conor Shaughnessy began his career with Leeds United and dropped down the EFL ladder. He has since climbed back up, and when playing for Portsmouth under John Mousinho, the center back won the League One championship and was selected for the Team of the Season.
He went into Portsmouth legend when he scored the goal against Barnsley that guaranteed Pompey’s promotion from League One. Pompey rallied late in the game to win 3-2, with Shaughnessy heading in the game-winning goal in the 89th minute off a corner.
With the victory, Portsmouth not only guaranteed their place in the current Championship, but they also took home the championship—a tremendous accomplishment for Mousinho’s team considering how many injuries they battled the previous year, especially to their defense. Shaughnessy managed to maneuver into the side and remain there after that.
Although he wasn’t the lone hero of their promotion, the fact that he won the team’s Player of the Season title after joining on a free transfer kind of tells the entire tale. Shaughnessy served as the cornerstone of a Mousinho team that dominated the third division the previous campaign.
