According to Gareth Southgate, the decision to keep Jack Grealish out of his England squad for Euro 2024 was motivated by his team’s poor performance.

The Three Lions manager reduced his team size from 33 to 26 before their final warm-up match at Wembley on Friday against Iceland. Seven players—including Manchester City star Grealish—were left off the provisional roster and will not be traveling to Germany.

Even though the former Aston Villa talisman battled with form and fitness under Pep Guardiola the previous season, he was still largely anticipated to travel with the team. Nevertheless, Southgate chose not to select the forward, leaving out another player with a forward mindset in James Maddison of Tottenham.

Southgate, following his team was verified as saying, “As I said, the players took the news respectfully,” with reference to Grealish and Maddison. Naturally, players think they belong, which is why they are elite athletes: they have that mentality and self-belief.

However, we feel that other players have had better seasons, especially in the last six months or so, despite the fact that we have players who have been performing exceptionally well throughout the league season.

We are fortunate to have a wide range of possibilities in the attacking zones, each slightly distinct. These have been difficult decisions, ones that our staff has made repeatedly in an effort to be fair and obtain the proper justification. Although we acknowledge that we could have chosen a different course, we stand by our decisions gareth-southgate-explains-jack-grealish-axed-englands-euro-2024-squad .

In addition to Grealish and Maddison, the squad was missing midfielder Curtis Jones, goalkeeper James Trafford, and defenders Harry Maguire, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Jarell Quansah. Injury kept unattached defender Maguire from playing, he acknowledged

He expressed his “utter gut feelings” at missing England’s most recent attempt to put an end to 58 years of suffering for the men’s national team.

“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer,”gareth-southgate-explains-jack-grealish-axed-englands-euro-2024-squad he wrote on social media. I’m doing my hardest, but I can’t seem to get over a calf ailment. Perhaps I overexerted myself in an attempt to succeed.
