Stuart Nethercott, a former Millwall defender, talks about his cancer diagnosis.
The 51-year-old has encouraged people to take precautions with their health after receiving advice from a physiotherapist to have a mole examined last summer.

PRIOR Stuart Nethercott, defender for Millwall, has courageously shared his experience with a cancer scare following the finding of a mole last summer.

The 51-year-old, who led Millwall to the Division Two championship in 2001, claimed that the diagnosis had left him in a “blur.”

Following the removal of the malignant mole, Nethercott experienced additional health issues.

He was given the all-clear in January of this year and has since advised others to take extra care of their health.

Nethercott stated on the Wall Talk podcast: “I was participating in a few charity games back in June or July 2023. During my massage, the physiotherapist saw a mole on my leg and inquired as to whether I had it examined.

“Nah, don’t be silly, it’s just there,” I thought to myself. I did it because he promised to have it checked. After going through the procedure with the doctors and getting it removed, the next step is to wait for the results.

“And when you were brought in, the findings were malignant. My wife and I were in the room, and I was just a haze. Bleary-eyed and fazed, I wasn’t even paying attention. It was one of those situations where I decided to fight through it.

“On December 20, I went in for the procedure; they made an incision close to my groin and performed a biopsy on the mole’s location. Everything went smoothly. I underwent surgery on Wednesday, was discharged on Thursday, and returned home to recover.

Unfortunately, Nethercott’s suffering was far from done, and as he was cooking the roast dinner over Christmas, he found himself feeling “really rough.” He was forced to check himself back into the hospital on Boxing Day after a rash started to form close to the area where the mole had been removed. There, he was prescribed antibiotics.
