It has been observed that a former Celtic star is participating in the Caledonian League.

Jonny Hayes made 145 appearances during his second stint at Aberdeen before announcing his retirement from professional football over the summer.

Rejecting the possibility to stay on as Pittodrie U16 coach, he went for the chance to be Celtic’s ‘B’ team coach alongside Stephen McManus.

The Irish winger, however, is still determined to play his own brand of football at the age of 37. On Wednesday night, he scored twice for St Mungo AFC in their 3-2 away victory over Dunipace.

The amateur team from Bishopbriggs, which excels in the Premier Division, were thrilled to have Hayes available for the game.

Hayes, who played 67 times for Celtic between July 2017 and June 2020, said the following when he announced in July that he was ending his illustrious career at the highest level of Scottish football: “It’s hard to believe that over 20 years have passed since I made the move from Ireland to begin my career as a professional footballer.”

“My playing days are coming to a close, but what a ride it has been. I never thought there would be this range of highs and lows, but I wouldn’t alter a thing.”
