Paul Onuachu’s protracted tale is likely to come to an end, as word has emerged from Turkey that Saints and Trabzonspor have finally agreed on a price, and the player will make the move right before the Turkish transfer window closes.
About twenty months after Paul Onuachu moved here from Genk, it looks like we are ready to say goodbye to him in the hopes that he would be the one to save us from relegation.
However, fate would give him a severe blow: not long after his arrival, Nathan Jones was fired, and a temporary replacement Ruben Selles intended to play the game in a different way.
I don’t think anyone can ever accuse Tall Paul of not trying hard enough. He played well in Selles’ first game in charge, a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, but he faltered a bit after that, even though he came close to tying the score away to West Ham with a powerful header.
Russell Martin was never going to fit into the team’s style of play when he arrived, therefore Trabzonspor, who saw his 15 goals in 21 League games, leased him out.
But it was insufficient to provide a fair price for him this summer, and the drama continued as the Turkish team made ridiculous proposals of about £5 million for a player who had only cost about £16 million 18 months before.
They appear to have become more serious now that the Turkish transfer window is about to end and have raised the stakes to something close to the £10 million that Southampton was requesting.
According to sources originating from Turkey, the sum is expected to range from £8 to £9 million. However, the specific terms of the deal regarding appearance-based add-ons and sell-on revenues remain unclear.
The terrible story is about to finish, and while Tall Paul didn’t do anything to actually press for a spot in our starting lineup, that wasn’t entirely his fault, as I previously indicated.
We are taking a loss and putting the money away for January in the kitty.
Though you didn’t give us much, Tall Paul did give us hope for a few games. Good luck for the remainder of your career.
