Following his admission of using threatening language and planning to incite violence during Portsmouth’s last game against Millwall at Fratton Park, a Pompey supporter has been banned from football and could go to jail.
Following Pompey’s 1-0 loss to the south Londoners at Fratton Park in the Carabao Cup first round last month, tensions reached a breaking point.
As the force fought to maintain a lid on things, police vans were seen closing Goldsmith Avenue to let Millwall supporters reach the Fratton rail station unscathed. During a fight outside the northeast corner of the field, a police officer was struck in the head.
George Shipp, 26, of Eastfield Road in Southsea, was the only person detained and charged during the altercation. He has since made an appearance at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court, where he acknowledged using derogatory language or actions with the intention of inciting fear or criminal violence.
Shipp has been given stringent guidelines to follow and will be sentenced on December 3. Until then, he is not permitted to attend any controlled football games. Among them is the prohibition from going inside any town or city where Pompey is playing an away game between twelve hours prior to kickoff and six hours following the game. A diagram showing exclusion zones for Portsmouth’s home game at Fratton Park was presented to him.
In response to magistrates’ request for an all-options pre-sentence report on Shipp, who faces jail time for his acts, an application has been made for a football banning order. He was given a bail with conditions.
“Just after the game on Tuesday, August 13 at approximately 9.40pm, there was a verbal altercation between opposing fans outside the north-east corner of the ground,” a police spokeswoman had earlier stated.
When officers moved to break up the group, one of them took a blow to the head and sustained minor injuries. The perpetrator of the cop assault is still unknown to us.
“George Shipp, 26, of Southsea’s Eastfield Road, has been charged with using words or actions that are threatening, abusive, or insulting in order to cause harassment, alarm, or distress.”
“Police blocked part of Goldsmith Avenue temporarily so the away fans could get to the train station,” the official continued.
