EXCLUSIVE NEWS: Pompey face delay to secure Brighton loanee – but deal is secure

Pompey can’t guarantee Mark O’Mahony’s appearance at Fratton Park until his Carabao Cup obligations are fulfilled.

The highly regarded 19-year-old will join the Blues as their 13th recruit of the transfer window after agreeing to switch to a loan and passing a medical exam.

Brighton, though, won’t approve the transfer until following Tuesday’s cup matchup with Crawley.

The Under-21 international for the Republic of Ireland is expected to play in the second-round matchup against the League One team.

Because of this, the Seagulls are hesitant to release O’Mahony until those playing obligations have been fulfilled, whether they are backup or team involvement.

The young striker may not be able to connect with Pompey until Wednesday, but he will still have plenty of time before Friday’s deadline.

That would enable him to be considered for the Blues’ opening-day lineup when Sunderland visits Fratton Park on Saturday.

O’Mahony lined up against Bournemouth in April to begin Brighton’s last Premier League game of the previous season.

Despite being substituted during the half of the 3-0 loss, he played in three Premier League games and four Bristol Street Motors Trophy games during a season of firsts.

But, Brighton’s manager Fabian Hurzeler is eager to allow the young player to go on loan in order to continue his excellent growth because Brighton is now making big purchases and bolstering their roster.

The former Cork youth player has attracted interest from Sheffield Wednesday as well, although Fratton Park has been identified as the likely destination.

O’Mahony, who had heart surgery earlier this month, will support a front line that is without Colby Bishop, the team’s top scorer from the previous campaign.

Despite this, Kusini Yengi has returned to action following his recovery from a groin injury, making an appearance as a second-half replacement in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough.

In the meantime, Christian Saydee—who has been playing centre forward for Pompey due to a striker shortage—scored twice in a performance that won him player of the match at Riverside Stadium.

O’Mahony will also increase Mousinho’s striking options. He signed with Brighton’s Academy in January 2023 for an undisclosed sum.
