Gareth Southgate has been out of work since leaving his role as England’s head coach after Euro 2024, but he has now reputedly accepted a new position with UEFA
Less than two months after leaving his role as England’s head coach, Gareth Southgate apparently got a new job with UEFA. Following Euro 2024, the 53-year-old resigned from his position, capping an eight-year run as the national team’s captain.
Even before his exit from the England team was made public, Southgate’s name has been linked to a number of positions in recent months. He was connected to Manchester United prior to Erik ten Hag resigning from Old Trafford.
According to reports, Southgate has assumed a new role that will continue through the end of the season. Henry Winter reports that he will watch games as a UEFA technical observer, together with former Everton manager David Moyes.

Identifying football play trends is another aspect of the job, and the insights gained from this process give coaches and coach educators a more comprehensive perspective. On the official website of the governing organisation, former Everton manager and UEFA technical observer Roberto Martinez offered his observations.
As a national team coach, Martinez clarified, “you are viewing it in a more holistic way and appreciating the evolution of the game and the competition itself, instead of just watching it for a certain reason. It can be different kinds of performances, like those of youthful players, or the way the rivalry is evolving into a more physical and strategic battleground as a result of new trends.”
At Euro 2024, a number of managers and past coaches were in attendance as technical observers, including Frank de Boer, Avram Grant, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fabio Capello, and Aitor Karanka. Southgate will reportedly not be considered a manager until at least the end of the current campaign due to his work with UEFA. The Football Association has not yet disclosed the person who would assume leadership of England’s team; for the moment, Everton legend Lee Carsley is filling in.
