EXCLUSIVE NEWS: Coventry City boss provides Tatsuhiro Sakamoto injury prognosis ahead of Sheffield Wednesday

The Japanese winger, who suffered a nasty gash to his leg and had to be stretchered off in the first minutes of Tuesday night’s 3-0 triumph against Blackburn Rovers, will not be able to play when Sheffield Wednesday visits the CBS Arena this coming weekend. However, Sky Blues manager Mark Robins is optimistic that the player will return shortly, provided he can avoid any difficulties as the lesion heals.

The City manager, who is also without long-term injuries Jamie Allen and Raphael Borges Rodrigues, stated, “He’s had about eight stitches in a gash in his thigh and what comes with that is you have to hope that he doesn’t get any complications or infections or things like that. However, I am hoping that he will be fit for the Preston game.”

“I haven’t seen it, but sometimes with the challenge he put in and with these boots these days with blades or even the studs with a little bit of a jagged edge on them, it can just slice through your skin,” Sakamoto responded when asked if he had seen the incident from back when he threw himself into a tackle with Tyrhys Dolan, whose studs caused the damage. And that’s what happened—it was a fairly severe incision that simply opened up his leg and required stitches.

“It’s not pleasant when one of your teammates has a cut like that, and obviously they were concerned about him,” said Robins, pointing out that both Milan van Ewijk and Josh Eccles appeared visibly disturbed by the sight of the wound. Unfortunately, it’s just a part of the game, and these things do happen occasionally. The fact that it occurred so soon into the game—after only six minutes or so—makes it disheartening.

“To be fair, it would be nice for the lad to catch a break.”

When asked if the officials still examine the players’ studs prior to a match, he replied, “No, not anymore. They’re too preoccupied worrying about whether their socks are too low.

“I think it’s difficult for them,” he continued. You used to walk on concrete, so what they used to do was rub their palm over your studs. However, since then, a few things have changed, and the majority of boots now contain these blade systems instead of conventional studs, or a combination of the two.
