Everton prepared Scott McTominay pay rise as part of Manchester United swap deal

Before the transfer deadline, Everton was prepared to extend to Scott McTominay a stronger deal than the one he had at Manchester United, according to The Athletic.

On Saturday, August 31, the publication posted on its website that, despite being unable to pay the Red Devil’s asking price, the Toffees had thought about moving Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the other direction.

McTominay, on the other hand, was never all that interested in moving to Goodison Park and had his sights set on moving up the league table before to the transfer window closing.

The Scottish international ultimately joined Napoli in Serie A, reportedly for a sum over £25 million, on deadline day [Sky Sports News, 30 August].

Did Scott McTominay’s transfer to Everton follow his departure from Manchester United?

Even if it meant losing Calvert-Lewin to a Premier League competitor, it appears that Everton was making every effort to persuade McTominay to transfer to Goodison Park this summer.

Whether or not that would have been a wise decision for the Toffees will divide supporters. Losing their main goal source before the season would have been a setback, even though they would have strengthened their ranks in the center of the park.

In the end, it’s unfortunate that the Blues were unable to finalize a deal before Napoli expressed interest in the Scotsman. Orel Mangala, at least, made his way to Merseyside to provide Sean Dyche’s team with a late boost.

Even if an agreement had been struck between the two teams, McTominay didn’t seem interested in the move, so who knows if the Blues will live to regret not finding the extra money to close this trade.
