Encouraged by 3,000 spectators from outside the stadium, Celtic won the charity match on penalties after Wayne Rooney’s brilliant first free kick was cancelled out by Gary Hooper’s equalizer, leaving the score at 1-1.
All in all, it was a fantastic day, with a substantial amount of money generated to support charitable causes in Manchester, Glasgow, and beyond, supporting initiatives from both teams’ charitable foundations.
Before the game, player Berbatov spoke warmly about his prior matches against Celtic in the 2008–09 Champions League when playing for United.
The Bulgarian scored twice in a 3-0 triumph at home against Old Trafford and then participated for forty-five minutes in the 1-1 match at Celtic Park.
“I had good games against Celtic,” he revealed in an interview with Celtic TV this past weekend. I managed to score a few goals. Ask any player about their experience playing at Celtic; the energy and support from the supporters is incredible, to put it mildly. It’s astounding. Goosebumps all over the place.

The former striker and Celtic favorite Stiliyan Petrov were partners on the international scene, and on Saturday they played against different teams. Off the field, the two had a tight relationship.
Before the game, Berbatov made a joke: “Are you ready? I assured him I will be right over. It is usually beneficial to have a buddy on the field. Naturally, both he and I want to win. The friendship is set aside for ninety minutes. After that, we laugh, embrace our children, and forget everything.
“Seeing him again is pleasant since he was a warrior. He was amazing; he ran the entire field for me and then passed the ball to me so I could score.
Petrov is definitely having a few laughs at his friend’s expense tonight because he prevailed in that particular personal war!
After ninety minutes, the match was tied 1-1. However, Celtic won the match 5-4 on penalties after Darren O’Dea scored the game-winning spot kick.
Gary Hooper, a former striker for the Bhoys, turned back time to score a poacher’s attempt that equalized Stiliyan Petrov’s shot that struck the post.
That was in reaction to a magnificent long-range top-corner free strike by Wayne Rooney that had the home crowd giddy in the first half.
In an intriguing match, Artur Boruc and Lukasz Zaluska produced a number of excellent saves to stave off the Red Devils’ legends throughout the course of the ninety minutes.
