Danny Rohl reveals Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer plans plus Ike Ugbo fitness timeline

Even though Sheffield Wednesday began the season with victories in two different tournaments and a full roster of 29, Danny Rohl will continue to work to bolster Sheffield Wednesday “front-foot” in his efforts.

Wednesday’s performance in overcoming Hull City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup and thrashing Plymouth 4-0 in their Championship opener has continued where they left off during their run to survival in the previous season.

After being released by Manchester United, Charlie McNeill, a 20-year-old free agent, scored twice at the MKM Stadium. Additionally, it was encouraging to see Ike Ugbo, a recent addition to the striker position and one of the team’s stars from the previous year, come off the bench.

But Rohl, who approved Malik Wilks’ season-long loan to Rotherham United on Thursday, understands the demands of a 46-game league schedule and is open to adding players.

I always play from the front. “Let us observe our options, the outcomes, and the decisions made by our players,” he remarked.Danny Rohl reveals Sheffield Wednesday's transfer plans plus Ike Ugbo fitness timeline

“I think it’s only possible to play two games in a row with this intensity when you start very early in the window and when you prepare this way in the pre-season,” the player said. “We feel like we go together.”

When it comes to his forward options, Jamal Lowe, who joined at the beginning of the summer, scored against Plymouth, and Ugbo is back in the mix, Rohl wants two players in every position.

“At the moment, Ike’s priorities are increasing his fitness level and earning minutes.” He trained, but because he missed six weeks in January, he now needs to advance to the next level. Our position was similar when he first arrived.

“This is great, we’ve worked so hard with the group, and you can see how they can run and run to the finish. We’ll see that as well as work to get Ike in shape.

“We’ll take it step by step. We’ll see how many more minutes he plays in the upcoming games. He will play more and more.

“The next step is the international break, which will consist of four or five weeks of practice for him, sort of like a little pre-season.

“You can see the challenge we face right now—we have different scorers right now, which is fantastic—six goals in two games with only one goal given up.”
