Jordan Schakel has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Boston Celtics for training camp and the preseason, according to Bobby Manning of CLNS Media. With this move, their roster now stands at 21, which is the most players a team can have during the offseason.
Schakel played 11 games with the Maine Celtics during the previous season. Schakel averaged 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 28.3 minutes per game throughout those games. He also shot 39.2% from the field and 39.3% from beyond the three-point line.
Every game, he tried 7.6 threes. The Celtics are most likely using this move to retain Schakel in their G League system, but it does give the training camp roster a much-needed addition to their skill set: shooting. Jordan Schakel will be joining the Celtics on an Exhibit 10 deal. There are already numerous three-point shooters on the Celtics’ roster. In addition to Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard being exceptional players from outside the arc, the entire top six can shoot the lights out. The Celtics don’t have any pure shooters beyond that, though.
The closest thing to that on their deep bench is most likely Drew Peterson. Though none of them are as strong as Schakel, Xavier Tillman, Jaden Springer, Anton Watson, Lonnie Walker IV, and Baylor Scheierman all have a chance. Schakel, who is 26, is approaching the stage of his career where he needs to find a permanent position. Maine might be that place, but that’s okay for the time being. He has consistently been a very good three-point shooter.
The problem is that the remainder of his abilities are woefully inadequate. Even at six feet six, he lacks playmaking ability and isn’t a particularly good defender. Right now, all he can really do is shoot, which is ideal for this Celtics team. The Celtics needed to find a player whose primary strength is three-point shooting because Svi Mykhailiuk was out of the picture. Schakel is that, after all.
He won’t be included in the starting lineup of 15. Not even a two-way deal will be awarded to him. However, he will provide the Celtics a wonderful skill to add to the mix during training camp and the preseason.
