Celtics must find a way to replace Oshae Brissett

Oshae Brisett has chosen not to exercise his $2.5 million player option for the next year.

The Boston Celtics forward was Joe Mazzulla’s team’s reserve player for the majority of the previous campaign. In addition to giving the Celtics energy and physicality, he opened up some small-ball lineup options. Now, after a championship run, Brissett gets to explore the free-agent market.

The 26-year-old Brissett participated in 55 Celtics regular season games. Averaging 44.4 percent from the field, he scored 3.7 points and pulled down 2.9 rebounds. But his box office performance falls short of capturing his true significance. He is the kind of player who has the ability to change the course of a match. The Celtics were energised by his hustling plays on several occasions.

The second tax apron team is the Celtics. They are only able to add players to the roster via trades, veteran-minimum agreements, and draft picks. Jordan Walsh might see an increase in the starting lineup. Still, he is a raw talent who would benefit from playing in the G League for another season with the Maine Celtics.

Boston is fortunate to be in a strong position when it comes to negotiating with free agents. The Celtics are the NBA champions for 2024, and all of their star players have long-term contracts. Mazzulla’s squad will therefore be strong competitors for at least the next three years. Experienced players hoping to win a title can be open to accepting a minimum deal in order to compete.

Boston obviously cannot guarantee playing time. In the regular season, Brissett played an average of 11.5 minutes each game; but, in the postseason, he only played 5.5 minutes per night. Any prospective Brissett successor must acknowledge that they will be a backup player and that their position will fluctuate from game to game if he doesn’t return during free agency.

Still, Brad Stevens needs to find a capable substitute for Brissett. The depth of Boston’s championship team was one of its main advantages. It will be difficult to balance coping with the constraints of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement with continuing to retool the fringes.

In the 2024 NBA Draft, the Celtics are fortunate to have the 30th and 54th picks. Thus, on draft night, they could locate a ready-made substitute. If not, players will be abundantly available to jump on Boston’s waggon for a lower salary.
