Kristaps Porzingis won’t be ready for action on opening night, following offseason surgery to treat his dislocated posterior tibialis tendon injury and torn retinaculum, which he sustained in Game 2 of the 2024 NBA Finals.
The Boston Celtics declared at the end of June that Porzingis had recovered from his surgery and would be back playing basketball in five to six months. This meant he would miss at least the first month of the 2024–25 campaign.

In an interview with Steve Aschburner of NBA.com, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla discussed Porzingis’s current state of recuperation and his availability as the team embarks on its next championship run. Training camp is set to begin soon. “A schedule has not yet been established.
When Aschburner questioned Mazzulla regarding Porzingis’ recovery from surgery, she replied, “But he’s progressing.” fulfilling each of his benchmarks. putting forth a lot of effort to return. He’s very proud of himself for doing his hardest to be available.
That was evident in Game 5 when he returned and truly ignited our team. Porzingis was able to play in the series-clinching Game 5 victory after suffering this unusual leg injury in Game 2 of the 2024 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.
In just 16 minutes of play during the game, Porzingis managed just five points on 2-of-4 shooting from the bench. Porzingis prepared for and participated in this final game for the Celtics despite being ill; Mazzulla asserts that this was a very heartfelt decision.
Mazzulla went on, “I believe it was a little bit of everything.” He is an excellent teammate. It was the heart. He takes pride in cultivating a mental toughness that I believe comes through in him. Additionally, he wanted to be a part of the chance for us to achieve as a team.
