Carlisle United’s hunt for a new manager and sporting director is thought to be in the ‘latter stages’ now, as detailed in a report by the News & Star.
Carlisle United are searching for a replacement for Paul Simpson following their choice to part ways with their former head coach last month. They were demoted from League One last season after finishing in the bottom four along with Fleetwood Town, Port Vale and Cheltenham Town.
The Cumbrians have a big choice to make on who to bring in next as they look to rise up the League Two table. They are currently sat in 22nd place in the table and are a point outside the bottom two after just one win from their first six games of the new campaign.
In this latest report regarding their pursuit of Simpson’s successor, the News & Star suggest the Cumbrians are moving ‘closer’ to finding someone.
It is still business as usual though for managers Steven Rudd, Mark Birch and Jamie Devitt this week. Rudd has said: “The week’s fully planned going into Swindon for us. We know what we’re doing training-wise and what days we are in, when we are going and things like that.
“So the week is planned. Whether it will be us [taking it], we don’t actually know at this point. But in the worst-case scenario the week is planned and we’re ready to go to Swindon – we’ve got our study done on them a little bit already, and we have to be better in what we do, but it might be us or it might not.”
It appears Carlisle United are edging closer to finding their boss but it remains to be seen at this time whether they will be in place for their trip to Swindon Town.
They lost 3-2 at home to Fleetwood Town over the weekend and will be keen on bouncing back with a good result against the Robins at the County Ground.
The Cumbrians have been linked with Crewe Alexandra’s Lee Bell lately, as per a report by Football Insider. The 41-year-old led the Railwaymen to the play-offs last term but they lost in the final to Crawley Town at Wembley.
Meanwhile, in terms of their sports director vacancy, journalist Alan Nixon has claimed on his Patreon that David Flitcroft, formerly of Mansfield Town and Port Vale, is on their radar.
Carlisle United will want to rise up the table and there is no question that they have enough quality in their ranks to compete in the upper reaches of the division.
What now?
The Cumbrians need to hit form and whoever they bring in will receive a decent squad.
They went into the window over the summer to bring in the likes of Charlie Wyke, Jordan Jones and Aaron Hayden.
