Burnley and Sunderland boosts as QPR handed two midweek injury blows

QPR took another two hits in the middle of the week against Coventry City. Both striker Michael Frey and defender Kenneth Paal needed time on the treatment table.

The R’s saved a point against the Sky Blues thanks to Kieran Morgan, who is 18 years old. This ended a run of four straight league losses for the team. Plus, Marti Cifuentes has games against top teams, so things won’t get any better for him either.

The first game is on Saturday at Burnley’s home field at Turf Moor. The next weekend, they play Sunderland at Loftus Road. That teams that are playing well would have already thought they had a good chance of beating the R’s, but news of injuries will make people even more optimistic.

Frey wasn’t in the team for the game; he watched from the stands at Loftus Road. Based on what the club said, that was because of a minor calf issue. Both players are doubtful for this weekend.

After the game, Cifuentes made it clear: “It’s a muscle problem in his thigh for Paal.” We need to find out what’s going on. He will probably have some tests tomorrow. It’s kind of the same with Michi Frey. Yesterday he got a leg feeling in training, it’s a small injury so we’ll see if he’s ready for Saturday.”

The R’s were given a boost in midweek action. Defender Jake Clarke-Salter saw his first minutes since the 1-1 draw with Millwall last month

The former Chelsea man had been missing from the matchday squad against Blackburn Rovers, Hull City and Derby County, returning to the bench against Portsmouth last weekend. Clarke-Salter finished 90 minutes under the lights at Loftus Road in a welcome return.

Speaking about the defender after he signed a new contract with QPR earlier this month, Cifuentes said: “Very happy because he’s a great football player, a very good guy in the changing room with fantastic leadership, with high demands, high standards. I think he’s one of the ones to set the kind of culture we want in this club.

“Obviously there are not many left-footed centre-halves in this league with his qualities, so it’s very good news for the club, for me as a manager and for him because that shows he’s committed with the project and what we’re trying to do here.”
