Ashley Cole, the first team coach of Birmingham City, will succeed Lee Carsley in the England senior squad, the club has confirmed.
Cole had been Carsley’s assistant coach for the under-21 team, and he contributed to their victory at the European Championships the previous summer. With Gareth Southgate’s departure, Carsley was named temporary manager of England, and Cole will be a member of his coaching team.
September’s Mations League matches between Finland and the Republic of Ireland will mark Carsley’s debut games in command. Many think that Carsley is trying out for the head coach position following Southgate’s 2016 promotion from the under-21s.
Cole, who earned 107 caps for his nation over an amazing Premier League career with Arsenal and Chelsea, will provide Carsley some invaluable experience playing for England. Birmingham City can confirm that Ashley Cole, the first team coach, will assume a new role in addition to his Club duties, according to a brief statement released by the Blues. The 43-year-old, who previously worked with current Interim Manager Lee Carsley’s under-21 team, has taken on a role supporting the England Men’s National Team.”
