Birmingham City cult hero’s shock release as flop signs deal and Oliver Burke talks planned

Birmingham City legend Maikel Kieftenbeld was surprised by FC Emmen’s decision to not renew his contract.

Despite impressive play in the Dutch second tier last season, Emmen released the all-action midfielder. Captain Kieftenbeld is ‘very astonished by the announcement’ that he can leave Emmen at the end of his contract.

In 2021, Kieftenbeld left St Andrew’s for Millwall and then Emmen for two seasons. First season with Emmen was hampered by injuries, but he returned to form in the second part last season. However, at 33, he is seeking his sixth club.

Werder Bremen’s management and the agents of Blues flop Oliver Burke will meet to decide his future in the coming days.

Werder Bremen anticipated Burke would thrive in Birmingham, but he made only one Championship start after New Year’s Day, a terrible effort against Rotherham that resulted in him being booed at halftime. He did not score or assist in 21 Championship appearances.

According to German daily BILD, Burke may leave the team that placed ninth in the Bundesliga last season. Clemens Fritz, Werder’s professional boss, told BILD: “We haven’t spoken yet, but we will be in contact with his consulting agency this week and discuss the future.”

Castillo on the move again

One-time Blues loanee Juan Castillo has signed for Dutch side RKC Waalwijk after a year out of football following his release by Chelsea. Castillo has signed a two-year contract with RKC, who finished 15th in the Eredivisie last season.

The former Netherlands junior international played the first half of the 2021/22 season on loan at Blues before heading to Charlton Athletic in January following limited minutes at St Andrew’s. Now 24, Castillo hasn’t played a competitive game since February 2022.
