A French football director has made plain a player reported to be of interest to Sheffield Wednesday has been made available for sale this summer.
The Star reported earlier this month that Karamoko Dembele was a name on the longlist of players Wednesday had scoped out as a potential target heading into what looks certain to be a busy summer of activity – and that contact had been made regarding his availability.
Dembele, 21, is a talented offensive player who created headlines as a teenager in Scotland back in 2016 when he made his debut for Celtic’s under-20 team at the age of just 13. The five-foot-six flier recently signed for French club Brest and spent last season on loan in League One with Blackpool, where he kickstarted a promising young career by scoring eight times and assisting 13 times in 39 league matches.
That comeback has generated interest from a range of teams including Wednesday. Reports since have linked adoring glances to Everton, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Southampton, Leeds United, Derby County and Middlesbrough.
With Brest having qualiied for the Champions League in a spectacular run to third place finish in Ligue 1, Get French Football News (via L’Équipe) report the offensive midfielder does not have a future with the club. Brest sports director Grégory Lorenzi appears to have stated in an interview that the 21-year-old will be one of four players to depart the club this summer – despite being committed until 2026.
Reports say a permanent or loan move is probable. It remains to be seen what actions are taken by Wednesday in what seems destined to be a strongly contested struggle for his signature.
